| My husband Morris & I have lived in Woodsville for over 20 years in a lovely 1780s cape. It is a perpetual work in progress! The little loves of my life are our beautiful Rottweiler dogs. I am so proud that our dogs have helped to convince so many people that they ARE loving, gentle and extremely affectionate creatures. This breed has unfortunately fallen into the hands of many irresponsible people, hence all the problems. My other love in life are my horses. I enjoy pleasure riding as well as competing in Dressage. Dressage is the equivalent of ballet in the human world. My horse is a 13 years old Thoroughbred gelding, that I purchased as a nine month old stud colt. I have owned horses since age 11, in fact, my first pony was part of my marriage "dowry"! My husband enjoys the horses as well (thank God) and he has a lovely Dutch-bred driving horse. Prior to owning a candle business, I owned a successful small retail store, Fox Hollow Tack Shop, where I sold horse equipment for 20 years. I ran my store by myself for all those years, six days a week. I was totally burnt out. The opportunity came along to buy this candle business from one of my customers. So I did, I sold my own store and bought this business in February of 2007. I find being on the wholesale end of the operation to be far more satisfying then on the retail end. Retail is a tough business. I am enjoying the freedom immensely. I don't consider my work to be "art", but the spiral candles do take a fair bit of craftsmanship to master. I purchase bulk beeswax in 50 pound rolls. I carefully unroll and cut by hand to the desired length, a sheet appropriate for rolling. Two sheets are combined, often using two different colors. This wax is tricky, and must be just the right temperature to work with. After rolling, the edges are then carefully flaired, the ends melted, polished and packaged. I also produce many, many molded candles as well. The flowers are most popular. The color options are endless and these candles are creative and fun to do. Molds can be made from objects, (i.e., a pear) by using silicone. I am always looking for my next experiment! Beeswax is a totally natural, renuable product. It burns cleaner, brighter, and considerably longer than paraffin wax and is virtually smokeless. Paraffin, is a petrochemical product that dissolves into the air we breath. Beeswax is an environment-friendly alternative. It has no added fragrances, as beeswax is traditionally used at the dinner table, where one doesn't want to compete with the wonderful aromas of the meal! My work is currently at Wren in Bethlehem, Blossoms Garden Cafe in Londonderry, Moose River in St. Johnsbury, Primrose Gardens in Woodstock, the Brick Store in Bath and I have a couple other places in the works.
